Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
Dear Families,
Battle Mountain Elementary School utilizes a support system called multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). The purpose of MTSS is to provide tiered instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children through early intervention. MTSS focuses on the “whole child” meaning it can support our students in all areas, but not limited to academics, behavior and social emotional needs. The tiered instruction in MTSS gets more intense based on the support that your child needs. For example, a student who is receiving tier 2 or small group instruction may need more intense one-on-one instruction at a tier 3 level. Our MTSS program not only supports students, but teachers as well as its effectiveness has been cited by the Every Student Succeeds Act.
In the past, our school’s MTSS room was used primarily for discipline and behavioral issues. We are working to help our students understand that MTSS does NOT mean that they are in trouble. It is a place that students can go when they need a safe place for support, redirects, breaks from their classroom environments, etc.
If your child reports that they were in MTSS or if you get a call from the MTSS office, please don’t automatically assume that they were in trouble. Have a conversation with your child about what led them to needing to be in or go to MTSS and talk with your child’s teacher as well. Two-way communication between families and BMES faculty is the key to your child’s success.
Thank you for your support!
